    Contemporary indie horror
I bought this book expecting a list of classics like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Shining,” maybe even going back to the Gothic Era. “The Castle of Otranto”? No, the selections are all very recent, most dating from 2017-2023, and all by indie publishers. I’ve been an avid reader of horror fiction for many years, and I had never heard of any of them!Every entry contains a photograph of the book, a brief, spoiler-free description, and classification icons telling you the genre, themes, and style. There are also entries recommending many works by a single author, plus a few descriptive essays. My only quibble: two entries on queer horror, but only two of the 100 books featured queer characters. You should probably go through this book with your Amazon shopping cart open, to avoid going back and forth all the time. I added about 20 of the 100 to my list. But you should still read the classics.

Yea your tbr pile isn’t going to be happy about this one.
Honestly I don’t need a reason to buy another book. I have a couple piles that I add to on a pretty regular basis. Don’t get me wrong I swear a couple times a year that I wont buy another one until I finished everything I have waiting. But its always just a lie, and before you know it I’m back to anticipating mail day so I can check out what new worlds potentially await me inside that next book.I think I’ve so far purchased 3 or 4 books recommended through 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered; with another 3 or 4 waiting for me to pull the trigger. So definitely go into this knowing that your tbr pile probably isn’t going to thank you, but secretly I anyone who gets this is probably hoping for that. What can i say though except this was a real fun read. Sadie does a fantastic job recommending and detailing so many of the wonderful authors and novels/anthologies that are out there in the horror literature world. There was plenty that I knew about and loved, and also plenty that I had never heard of but couldnt resist buying after reading it briefly summarized. In my opinion this book is a treasure chest full of arrows pointing you to your next spooky world to inhibitAlso I just have to say that Sadie’s love for the genre is really uplifting. I’d never fault authors for needing to promote their works. Especially when they’ve poured their blood and soul in between the pages and whether it gets seen relies so heavily on them. But this book is 101 percent Sadie just pushing other people out into the spotlight, using every bit of her platform to promote as many people as she could possibly fit between these pages. The whole package just feels really opposite of the selfish world/self centered social media that we inhabit and I really dug that.

A guide to some of the best horror books published now. Divided into subgenres and sub-subgenres each section has an introductory essay and several books with a synopsis and editor’s opinion/reason for choosing. Books are described under the following headings: At a Glance; Themes; Tone; Style; Setting; Publishing. Scattered throughout are essays written by popular authors and Author Spotlights.I read a bit each day for ten days and found it both enjoyable and interesting read. Mostly, the books were known to me but I’ve only read a handful. It will be put to use for gathering tbr recommendations for years to come.

EDIT: after replacing the item, I’m giving this 5 stars because the book is a delight. The delivery was great, but when I opened the package the book is bent on the top left corner and it’s very visible and you can feel it when you touch it. While this doesn’t make it impossible to read the book, it’s extremely annoying for someone who likes to keep his books in a very good condition.

A must-have if you deem yourself a fan of genre. This book will guide you through a 25-year history of horror novels and short stories.
