Excellent Book!
This book is one of the most comprehensive HR and leadership related books I have ever read! It provides excellent examples and simplifies many tough conversations managers hate to have with employees, but now can feel empowered and confident having them with the strategies and information in this book. It is a must read for every HR manager and person in a leadership position!

If you manage people get this book
This book was recommended by an HR friend. It has great ideas and anyone really could use this book. Even if you want to have a tough convo with your boss.

The word tracks are pure gold!
One of Paul’s strengths is his ability to give you a complete script of a conversation–from both sides–so you have words to bring to the table. Sometimes it’s incredibly uncomfortable just to read the conversations! If you can’t read it, it makes it difficult to say it.One of the top ten books on my professional bookshelf! Perfect gift for someone who has just been promoted.

My go-to management book for years!
Great book for those tough and many times awkward conversations. Being honest and forthright with employees is the way to go and this book helps you discuss everything from body odor to attendance issues with tact and candor. The concrete examples are the best feature of the book. Saying that one should discuss things in this manner or that is much less effective than hearing the actual manager’s side of the conversation being played out.As a new manager last year I have gone back and referenced this book more than any other management book I’ve read!Update: I’ve now been in management for quite a few years and am at a Director level. I have given all the managers I lead a copy of this book and they have all found it very useful. Unlike many leadership books that are strong on theory but light on actually giving you practical steps, this book has concrete examples of conversations for hundreds of different staff dilemmas. I highly recommend it to anyone who leads people or even just has to deal with people. I’ve used some of these techniques as a mother, as a customer and as an advocate for my parents. It’s like magic in it’s effectiveness!

a keeper for the office at work
This book contains so much little stuff that it is too much to really read all the way through and gain anything in my opinion. So, I keep it in my desk at the office and use it as needed…it does have some great information and advice for sticky situations.

Wonderful read.
Wonderful read. I bought this book because I have a problem subordinate and we needed to have difficult conversations with her. Luckily, she left on her own. Yet I kept reading the book. I’m gladni did! It covers a WIDE range of conversations you may need to have with your subordinates in a very delicate way.

I liked that this book gave advice but also actual pieces of conversation and examples. Many times that’s what I’m looking for with a difficult conversation is: How do I even broach this topic? How should I start off? etc.. I’ve referred back to this book quite a few times and always came away with a few notes for the meeting I’m about to have. Good purchase if you supervise employees.
