    Powerful True Story
A personal account of a Dutch family of Christians during WWII who opened their hearts and then their home to Jews and Dutch resistance workers in acute danger from the Nazis, The Hiding Place is a powerful true story showing what ‘love thy enemy’ and ‘give unto others’ can mean.I read Corrie ten Boom’s book many years ago and then, recently, came across this Blackstone audio version. I haven’t read a book like this in a while so I took it up to see how as an adult reader, I would feel about it.I found it quite easy to settle into new to me narrator, Wanda McCaddon’s narration of the story and enjoyed the way she voiced the various generations of the Dutch ten Booms and their neighbors and, as well, the Nazis. I haven’t heard the Dutch accent to know, but I think she mostly didn’t do a Dutch accent so much and focused on the storyline and voices.I appreciated the forward from the Sherills and then the follow up comments about Corrie’s life after the events of the book. The heart of this story is Corrie sharing about her life from childhood pre-WWI in the Dutch city of Haarlem in the old house where the family watchmaking business was in the shop below and the family lived above and then the other two-thirds of the story in her secret work with the Jews and Resistance and what came after when her family was caught. Oh yes, this is very much a Christian classic and it was the family’s full trust in God that led them to do what they did and got them through what came after, but it is more than that. Many fiction and true accounts focus on the Jews or even the Resistance, but this story brings the other facet- the civilian people who when above and beyond to do what was right even if it meant punishment and death. There are several examples of the strict rules and rationing during the Occupation, but the family gave even when they had so very little and did what they could for others who were suffering. The Hiding Place had me crying so often, but also left me uplifted and thoughtful. Corrie’s papa had some wonderful wise truths he gave his children that have universal meaning for us all and Corrie herself was a plain, average woman who did what she had to do even when weak and fearful. It is an inspirational story and will likely always stay with me.While not overly graphic in the details inside prison and concentration camps, the story does go there so be warned. And, as I said above, this is a Christian classic with strong religious thematics. I would recommend it to those who enjoy WWII era historicals particularly those that deal with the Jewish plight and that of those in occupied areas controlled by the Nazis.

Every person should read this book, young to old
I really love history in general and often find myself drawn to documentaries and biographies. Especially regarding WWI and WWII. I honestly feel this book has changed my life.I would like to add I had read Anne Frank’s diary, which leaves you sad. I also didn’t feel comfortable reading her diary when it came to her teenage romance. It was uncomfortable for me and made me wonder if she would have been okay with such personal information shared with millions of strangers. On a personal note, I have many journals and when I reread them sometimes I am happy and other times I rip pages out because it is so far removed from who I am today that I wouldn’t want anyone reading them, including myself.I have also been listening to The Watchmaker’s Daughter on Audible, which gives historical context this book does not as well as shares other people’s diaries, including Anne Frank. The Hiding Place is not like that at all. This book is written from Corrie’s point of view and is remarkable. Will leave you feeling encouraged and changed for the better. Like, no matter what circumstance you find yourself in, no matter how dark, how impossible, how complex or evil God is always with you. It shows how we can find things to be grateful for even when on the surface they are not good.It really shares in great depth the dynamics in her family. Her father, her mother, and her sisters, even in taking care of their aunts as they aged. This information is not found in The Watchmaker’s Daughter. The foundational beliefs formed within her home are clearly described in this book. I listened to The Hiding Place on Audible first and had to have the book. There are many pages I want to highlight and return to.While it is a scary topic and should include a mature adult to explain, I truly think children even as young as 8 yrs old, could benefit.Anytime I start to feel down, I will remember Betsey and Corrie’s father. Unbelievable faith and resilience. If only everyone was raised with parents with such unwavering faith. Corrie does well describing her areas of faults and growth. She shares moments of fear, moments of being conflicted between what is right and wrong (such, as lying to Nazis or Gestapo), and moments where she reflects on her sister Betsey’s great faith and allowing it to change and grow her. I have read Corrie’s book Tramp for Lord is the next book to read after The Hiding Place. I can’t recommend this book enough.

I’ve read this book many times and each time I feel inspired. This is a story of the Ten Booms love for others and the cost of that love. However, they had no regrets… During the nazi occupation of Holland this family hid and helped many Jews. Corrie records everything they did to help them… it’s incredible! They were sent to prison for it and while some didn’t survive, Corrie was released after being in two concentration/work camps. Her story starts before the war begins and how Semitic mentality slowly creeps into Harleem…the results of war and the after effects of the war. But above all, it is a story of faith. Tremendous faith and trust in the Almighty! When everything seemed hopeless ( and their situation was dire) they chose hope. It’s so inspiring!

I loved the way it’s written. It’s a story of courage in the worst times. And how you can burn the candle of love in absolute darkness
