Great Writing, A Believable Story and Damned Hard to Put Down
I came across this book as a suggestion by Kindle. I’ve purchased other books that were suggested to me in this manner and came away, usually, very disappointed. C.A. Fletcher is now on my “favorites” list of authors to keep going back to, which is a relief for me because I find past, well-loved authors on my list have disappointed time and again with mediocre, current writings. Most have been removed from my list. For me, Mr. Fletcher is a new find. It’s encouraging to find that there are some “new” authors out there who actually not only know how to write, but write extremely well. When I review a book, I do not waste my time by rewriting the storyline of the book. That’s already been done not only by the publishers, but also by other “reviewers.” I don’t understand why reviewers feel the need to do this, but I guess I don’t need to.This book grabs you from the beginning and is based on a very possible future for humanity. There was not one character in the book that I felt was not needed to make this book what it is. The author makes you feel what the characters feel, while leaving room for you to add your own imagination to the storyline. You see that I do not explain the gist of the book or its characters because it is up to you, the reader, to figure them out for yourselves. I’m saying that if you want a book that is finely written, has characters you can relate to, situations that enthrall you and an ending that does not disappoint, then you will want to buy and read it for yourself. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m ready to start another book by Mr. Fletcher, which is written under the name Charlie Fletcher, as the author of children’s books. Some of the finest books I’ve read have been written for children. With all sincerity, Mr. Fletcher, I hope that there is a sequel to A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World. I thank you for giving me great enjoyment and pleasure with this fine book. JO

    Liked thus one
Nice story. I liked the premise of a slow ending instead of a catastrophic cause to the end of the world as we know it.

Slow start but wonderful and heartbreaking
I picked this book up on sale as it sounded interesting. I read a small bit about it and sounded like there was twists to be heartbreaking and that is true, but definitely at different points than I assumed. It was a really good book. The first quarter of it was a little slow and I considered stopping, but then it picked up and i didn’t want to stop reading it. I highly recommend it.

Decent, but really did we need the no spoiler thing at the beginning?
This is just a decent book in my mind, which means it’s reasonably well written, and it plays with the dystopian setting and theme in ways that are mostly expected but there are occasional differences. (like the dogs–why don’t more dystopic works have dogs in them? I loved this aspect of the book). It’s mostly standard dystopic fare, though: a ruined world, a brave narrator who goes on a journey (well, our narrator is both brave and hyper self-aware of their faults and errors), nasty enemy cults, and other adult characters who it is hard for our narrator to trust. It does somethings quite well–this book is about a love of stories/books , which I really enjoyed. Now for the spoiler, which no, I’m not going to disclose except to say, um, duh, I’d figured it out about 1/3 of the way in and I don’t think it would hurt the story for readers to know, so I really didn’t get the “no spoiler” note from the author. Sorry, it just wasn’t that surprising, but it was still an enjoyable twist as were some other things near the end. And as another reviewer noted, there was SO MUCH foreshadowing that it kind of gave things away before the end anyway.I read about a book a day, primarily in sci-fi and fantasy and crime when I’m not reading for work (uni prof here), so overall, for me, this is firmly in the 3 star category. I was glad I spent an afternoon reading it, even if I wasn’t surprised by much, but I probably won’t reread it. It didn’t do anything wildly innovative or new, but it was still a solidly written novel with some good moments in it.

The book is great, has good suspense, action and plot reveals to make you want to read and read until you see the book ended.I was fully engaged by this book, i felt the plot was awsome on tis own and even if the world creating wasnt big, it did seem to fit the narrative. I did predict some of the plot afther 50% of the kindle but that did not stop me from loving the book, i recomend it to everyone.

An end of the world story with no zombies? And no mutants and no crazy gangs driving around in messed up cars? Can it really be a post-apocalyptic story without at least zombies? It certainly can, and it is better because of it. This is a quest story with a difference: Our hero isn’t looking for a way to restore the world (too late for that), he just wants to get his stolen dog back. This leads to adventure and suffering and friendship and growth for the hero, in a world that is no longer owned by humans, or even much interested in them. The story is very well told. There is enough detail about the radically changed landscape to provide a rich background, but that is just the canvas on which the author paints a vivid portrait of our hero, Griz. There are very few other humans in the story (or the world, for that matter). We get to know Griz as a very strong and determined person, making mistakes, enduring losses and pain, sometimes surprised by beauty and joy, but always true to the goal of finding the stolen dog. This is a beautifully written and moving story. Highly recommended.

The story has a good pace which never makes it boring up to the very end.

I absolutely loved this book, from beginning to end, and I had to force myself to put it down every time I had to. I found it by chance and it ended up being the best story I’ve read in a long time. The love for the dogs shown along the lines, and the way they’re the central part of the story got to me very deeply since my dog is my family too.
