Amazing Book – exactly the high fantasy I was hoping for!
5/5 stars! There was great world building and done in a way that I didn’t feel like the author was trying to meet a word quota. The main character is quite relatable and isn’t just some automatic bada$$ female heroine, Keera shows real struggle with mental illness and succumbing to alcoholism and fights to be her most genuine self, which is a main struggle throughout the book. You can really see a turning point in the characters growth when she meets her enemy, The Shadow, and from there she grows into becoming stronger, fighting for her sobriety, and still fighting against enemies of the Kingdom she was forced to uphold. It left many questions and there was a plot twist I actually did NOT see coming. Melissa Blair beautifully executed the first book in her Halfling Saga series. Looking forward to the next book!

It was a very good book but it often reminded me of Throne of Glass. Still a really good read!

    4.5 oit of 5
I really enjoyed this book. The worldbuilding was superb and the characters were so interesting. I loved the system set up with the Blade, the Arsenal, and the other halflings that are forced to serve the king. I thought it was an interesting way to set up a spy and assassin network. I felt it was a 4.5 out 5. I am really excited to start the 2nd one!

I made the mistake of going by recommendations on goodreads, which advertised A Broken Blade as a fun, dark fantasy read with a main LGBT-storyline and a cool assassin as a main character. Well, the character was indeed an assassin but she was not, in fact, cool. And it was also not a fun read and the dark fantasy was some lukewarm daydream with some fantasy elements at best. It was clearly written by someone who read a lot of similar books and decided to try it out too by simply picking some parts or characters of other stories and applying it to a fantasy world that couldn’t be more bland. What happened to world building and lore? Isn’t that usually the most fun part about creating your own story? What happened to unique and interesting characters? Am I getting too old now?I’m tired of everything this book stands for.The cover is pretty af tho!!

Keera is the King’s Blade, a killer and the most talented spy in the kingdom. When a mysterious enemy called the Shadow makes a move against the Crown, the King orders Keera to find them. Tracking the Shadow, she arrives in Faeland. There, she discovers a lot of things that will shatter her beliefs and sense of purpose. The Shadow is not who she expected and maybe they are not her true enemy either. Determined to fight for her tormented people and find the answers she seeks, Keera will have to fight if she wants to make it out alive. This book is everything I love. It has diversity, enemies to lovers slowburn, interesting and complex characters, a unique and fascinating world and perfect pacing. From the very first pages, I was hooked. And from that, I just couldn’t put the book down. The writing is truly addictive, filled with emotions, secrets and authencity that made me feel for Keera every step of the way. I am absolutely in love with her (and about half of the characters as well). She is an amazing protagonist, morally-gray but very true and brave and strong. I loved everything about her. Riven is a very interesting character as well, although I had more trouble truly understanding him because we don’t read from his point of view. I love him still and I can’t wait to see how he evolves in the next book. I have a sore spot for Nikolai as well. His humour and malicious flirting had me smiling a lot and he is also a very touching person that I am eager to see more of. Protect him at all costs! The characters are truly a strength in this story and so well-written I feel like I know them. The plot was absolutely breathtaking and the plot twist at the end nearly killed me because of how intense it was. I have only one thought in my mind: I want to read the sequel!I HIGHLY recommend this amazing fantasy romance book with diversity, intensity and just the right amount of spice.”Death is the only certainty in this life.”TW: violence (physical and psychological), death, murder, blood, assault, torture, abuse (physical and psychological), sexual content, mutilation, selfharm
