    Great historical information
This is a great narrative of the evil promoted by the KKK and its equally-evil leadership in the early 20th century. Very easy and captivating read. Highly recommend.

What you Never Knew About the KKK
I had to read this for the bookclub: it went into the history of the KKK in the 1920’s mid-America. Another history book I thought and wondered if it would put me to sleep. BUT the story becomes both scary and exciting as you read on. While it is actually the history of the rise of the Klan in Indiana (with much footnotes in the back to prove the accuracy of the story), it traces the rise and fall of the KKK in middle America (the Heartland of the title). It is the story of both the great evil of the Klan leaders and finally of the bravery of one woman, her family, the reporters, the lawyers, and the jury members who fought the Klan. Very thought provoking while being true to the history of the rise and downfall of the Klan which reached deep into the politics, governance, and police of a Northern state that sided with the Union during the Civil War and then lost its way in the 1920’s. A good read!

    Chronological and Factual
A really good read about our dark past that is still with us today.

    expertly researched and masterfully written
Reading this in 2024 as our democracy is being threatened by forces similar to those of the KKK in the 1920s, this book goes far to help answer the question of how seemingly decent people could follow such an evil liar, and even more importantly, how did they cease to follow and subsequently clean up politics and government.

    A Must Read
Fascinating & gruesome story that all Americans should read. As bleak as the times of the Klan were, the country did break the spell of these violent people. That fact provides hope for us today that we can overcome the hatred spewed by White Christian Nationalism. Reading this book provides an understanding of the group’s beginnings. The words of hate are the same from both groups, and we must be as brave as the few individuals in Egan’ s book were.

Should be taught in Indiana history classes
Well researched and frightening. There are so many parallels to current times. However, I did find one factual error that slipped through editing, and I only noticed because I grew up there. In early chapters, Valparaiso was described as being in the northeast part of that state. It is, in fact, in the northwest part of the state.

    Depressing, but required reading
We might have learned in history classes the the Klan was something that arose in the South in the 1870s. This chilling book shows that it was the strong precursor to Nazism in much of our very own country, and as such, I found it terrifyingly hard to read. The name of the organizations might differ, but this cult is on the rise again in our country. We can’t always count on the inevitable corruption at the top to bring it down as happened in Indiana. We need to pay heed to these cults right now.I took off a star because it seemed to jump around a little introducing the protagonists. Read it anyway please.

Mycket välskriven och dokumenterad skildring om Ku Klux Klans stora makt i ett antal delstater i USA åren kring 1925. Rekommenderas!!

Very educational about the rise of the KKK, the hatred and evil they perpetrated and the similarities to the nazis. These are important teachings as this evil must never be forgotten.
