A well-written reflective work
This book by Jimmy Carter very much matches the title it is given. I very much enjoyed reading this work that went over key events in his life, such as growing up in segregation, the influence of his parents, Rosalynn, the Navy, his political career, etc. If one is familiar with Jimmy Carter’s works, then some of the key details are nothing new, but it does make for a positive refresher, and he offers additional details that offer new perspective on his life and career. I found it interesting that he notes that his father was a Democrat who voted for Republican presidential candidates such as Landon, Willkie, Dewey, and Eisenhower, and was opposed to FDR’s agricultural policy (ironically FDR’s son James endorsed Ronald Reagan over Carter in 1980). Yet Carter remained loyal to the party at the presidential level, casting his vote for Harry Truman who he deeply admired, and the reaction of his superior when he expressed interest in attending a Henry Wallace rally. He also notes other aspects such as his time in the Navy and some of the unique training he received, along with being exposed to technology that was revolutionary for its time. He also acknowledges that it took him time to recognize Rosalynn as his full partner, and that he was grateful for coming to his scenes. He discusses his support of civil rights and Lyndon Johnson when both were unpopular in his state, along with his own electoral history and the obstacles he encountered. The book also has several poems he has written, along with original paintings by him that add an additional artistic element to the book. I also enjoyed reading about his work with the Carter Center and how it has helped people throughout the world, and his discussion of his relationships with other presidents (he developed a close friendship with former rival Jerry Ford). Overall, the book provides a wonderful summary of his life, work, and political career, and is a good read for those who have or have not read his other works.

Jimmy Carter gives us his view on the facts of his life, since childhood in the segregated South to his days at the head of the Carter Center and it is facinating to be given such a privilege. Everything is his life is extraordinary — since his days in a submarine to his presidency and his humanitarian action which earned him a Nobel Prize. Everything he did is explained with clarity as being “ordinary” and “simple”. Jimmy Carter illustrated this book with naive paintings that are surprisingly effective: his portraits look like real people, his landscapes look like nature. With lucidity, he apparaises his craft: “I realized many years ago that I do not have any special talent as an artist or craftsman, but with a lot of study and practice I have become fairly proficient.” Jimmy Carter writes like he paints, with proficiency. This is not great literature, but one discovers behind the written word an author as a “gentleman”. What is presented as common sense is, actually, dignity, fairness, kindness. It is such a rare feeling, that it is worth reading every page. Another detail: one feels a little better while reading it!

I lived in the USA whilst he was President and all thought he was weak but I never thought so. This book shows that he is one of the most caring and genuine people to have “ruled” in the US. I hope he will be remembered for all that he has done. Good reading.
