    A wonderful read
This historical mystery and romance novel follows Kara, a skilled creator of mechanicals, accused of murder at the Great Exhibition. Teaming up with an enigmatic Scotsman, Niall Kier, the duo unravels a pretty complex mystery while navigating a sweetly hesitant romance. Kara’s strong, vivacious character and the unforeseen twists in the mystery make this a delightful and engaging read.I love historical mysteries and historical romance novels. This book covers both. The main character is one of the exhibitors in the Great Exhibition.  When a man is found murdered a piece of one of her mechanicals is found with him, and she becomes the prime suspect. Mr. Niall Kier, a reserved Scottish blacksmith, artist and fellow exhibitioner comes to her aid to discover the true killer, with no help from the Metropolitan Police.I loved the chemistry between Naill and Kara. It was sweetly hesitant and felt very real. Both main characters were likeable. Kara is my favorite kind of heroine: strong, vivacious, kindly, sympathetic, extraordinarily capable, and she takes no nonsense from anyone, including the police. The mystery was complex enough and the outcome unforseen. This was a fun read.

A most intriguing cast of characters
This was a nice departure from the usual books Ms. Marlowe writes. It features Miss Kara Levett, an heiress and the daughter of a baron. She is not like the other girls of the ton. In fact, she is exhibiting her mechanical masterpieces at the Great Exhibition. Unfortunately, someone destroyed her masterpiece and then used a part of it as a murder weapon. She is in a race against time to determine who was the real murderer while keeping out of the clutches of Scotland Yard. She can’t do it alone, and Niall Kier is her perfect partner. Kier is a blacksmith at the Great Exhibition and is quickly enamored of Miss Levett. It was wonderful to see such a capable female protagonist. It was a nice touch that Kara has many life skills that someone in her position would not normally have. Her father wanted to be able to protect her from the many kidnapping attempts during her lifetime. She is a pragmatic person and is used to taking charge. Kier doesn’t fight her on her actions and demands she stays behind which made me like him all the more. This is not a steamy romance, but a wonderful murder mystery with sexual tension. There is a great cast of characters and I am looking forward to the next book!

    Loved this book
I love historical fiction. I mostly read books within the Renaissance period, but several others as well. Deb Marlowe gives a completely different take on what happens in London during the 1850s. Mystery, a little suspense, strong women, artists and science nerds. Oh and don’t forget the Great Exhibition. You have to read this!

    What a great story
This book was a delightful read. The characters were so likable, admirable, and interesting. I was surprised by the many creative twists and turns all centered around the Great Expedition in London. I highly recommend it.

    Good story.
The story and the development of the main characters was good. Several things bothered me. The language was very stilted and story didn’t seem to flow. It felt choppy and I didn’t always follow why the characters got where they were. I felt like I had to assume a great deal. Little Harold popped in occasionally. There was no closure and was never sure what happened to Harold was he ever interviewed by the police. Seems like his testimony would have aided Kara and Niall. I have to hope the Harold appears in the next part of the series and more significantly than a messenger.

This is a thoroughly engrossing read. The characters are complex and multifaceted, the story is very detailed with a wonderful progression of suspense and, the author captures the very essence of Victorian England perfectly. Kara is a captivating heroine who is completely ahead of her time. I am looking forward to her next adventure.

Maybe it was my frame of mind when I started reading this, but it took me a couple of chapters to sink into the story. Then I was reluctant to put it down. I always like a strong female main character, though Kara seems almost too capable and talented.

I don’t read many historical novels, but I thought I’d give this a go. It took me a chapter or 2 to get in to it, but after that I couldn’t put this down. The characters are well written but with secret pasts that you wants to know more about. It’s a bit of a will they won’t they get together from the start of the story. The story is well written and keeps you guessing to the last chapter.Good read, with good characters that you learn more about has you go through the book.

I didn’t know what to expect from this book but I’m so very pleased I bought it. It’s a thrilling Victorian mystery set at the time of the Great Exhibition and dark deeds abound. I didn’t pick the killer and I’m really looking forward to the next book.

I was hooked into the story from the first page. Great mystery. Had me guessing all the way through. And when the culprit was revealed I could see how all the little hints added up. Likable characters, nice flow and good even pace. But it’s not a romance.
