    Auschwitz#34207
Joe’s story, as written by Nancy Sprowell Geise, is nothing short of miraculous. I am so glad that Joe decided to share his story with the world. The horrors Joe experienced were horrific and heartbreaking. The resilience he exhibits is amazing. Throughout his story, Joe is fortunate to meet multiple angels who assist him in living through the hell of Auschwitz.Kudos to the author for sharing Joe’s miraculous story. It is told with such tenderness and respect and backed up with research, photos, and documents. We must never forget these brave soldiers of the world. As the stories come out, may the deceased rest in peace.

    Touching and Inspiring
This book is the most beautiful story I have encountered from a Holocaust survivor. The bitterness and cynicism often found in these accounts are absent in Joe’s story. I believe Joe was an exceptional person blessed with a strong work ethic and an unrivaled mindset that cannot be learned or taught. These qualities, along with his faith and a lot of admitted luck, allowed him to survive and often thrive under the most dire human circumstances. I am grateful for his courage to share his story and honored to have heard his tale. I feel richer for it.

    Heartbreak and Healing
Joe Rubinstein was a remarkable man. He shares his memories of his family in Radam, Poland so beautifully. I wish I had known them. From the depths of Nazi hell to his rebirth on American soil, Joe takes the reader on a very emotional ride. From the ashes of torture and deprivation to the riches of success in business and the blessings of a happy family, Joe’s story is an inspiration. This was a beautifully written biography.

Author added a lot of fluff
This is a fascinating story….It’s all true and Joe Rubinstein actually died just after the book was written. There are so few survivors left. My only complaint is that the author really stretches out each story and the events, which could be told with fewer paragraphs. She goes into a lot of detail regarding the suffering he endured. I had to fast forward a lot because the events are so depressing. It’s hard to imagine how evil human beings could behave toward other human beings. Tony Smith

    Let us not forget
Amid the great and action packed events of victories and defeats in war, it easy to forget that we are dealing with the lives of human beings. Joe’s insight on ‘freedom’ is profound. To be made in God’s image is to have the freedom to choose. To forget or deny being made in God’s image is to lose one’s freedom to live freely. Joe was determined to never allow the Nazis to kill or take this precious gift from him. The light of his prayers to God in all situations was as much a weapon against the unspeakable darkness as any military action. Let us choose life.

    Great book!
It’s hard to not triumph with a story about the Holocaust and what the human spirit can endure.

Unbelievable story of faith and survival!
What an amazing story of faith and survival! As I read it, I felt as if Joe Rubinstein was sharing his experiences with me. I was drawn in from the first knock at the door. I am amazed at, and inspired by, his spirit and strength of character, which are revealed time and time again. He manages to hold on to hope as a prisoner in Auschwitz, one the most horrific places on earth, during the Holocaust, one of the darkest periods in history. What an incredible journey! He chooses love and joy rather over hatred and bitterness as he moves forward with his life at the end of the war. Nancy Sprowell Geise writes in a natural style, seamlessly incorporating minute personal and historical details as she reveals his story. This is a must-read for adults and young people as well! In addition to relating a riveting story from a rare point of view, a map, photographs, a timeline, glossary, notes and questions for reflection and discussion make it an excellent educational tool.

The narratives of Holocaust survivors leave such a deep impression. On one end it is difficult to imagine that humans are capable of inflicting such horrendous atrocities on fellow human beings – be it men, women or children. And at the other end, we learn about the extraordinary resilience of human character from individuals who managed to survive and emerge from unthinkable horrors and yet went on to live a full life seeking purpose, joy and love. Such books are a true reflection of the different shades of humanity.

DANKE

I have read several books about the Holocaust, but this was different. OK, it wasn’t Joe’s own words, but told to the author by Joe in a way which made it very real, and vivid. This should be made mandatory reading for all schoolchildren to know what happened in Europe’s very near history. Also, for all the holocaust deniers out there, should just look at the photographs contained in the book. And all those bandwagon jumpers who shout and scream ‘Nazi Scum’ at whoever disagrees with their political views should take need of this, and see what the Nazis were really like, although I suspect this book only scratches the surface. At the time of writing this review – 4 October 2020, I’ve just Googled Joe Rubenstein, and discovered he celebrated his 100th birthday just a couple of weeks ago on 16th September. Happy birthday Joe Rubenstein, may your story never be forgotten.
