Susan Goldin –
as good as it gets
Michael Crichton rocks. “Binary:A Novel” – a little fast read – suspenseful, frightening – a warning of things to come and our political ability to deny eventualities … is no exception. The author, even in his younger years at his craft (writing, not medicine, not anthropology)…knew how to unfold a good tale and engage a reader in white knuckled suspense. His later works we all know from their film versions… are certainly gripping and wonderful …. but each seemed imbued with a warning which humans are wont to ignore. Thankfully – Mr. Crichton found these oversights, mismanagements and actions based upon greed – dangerous enough to explore in his novels. As a reader, I miss him. His life was full but all to short. We still need his insights in fiction and in reality. Although dated, “Binary” is merely a glimpse at what was to come…. done brilliantly.

foreshadows later books
It was a pretty good story. I noted that the ending was very much like later and more well-known stories: in the end, nothing changes. Nobody, individuals or organizations such as media and governments, seems to learn a lesson or grow. All the fuss and bother was, finally, for nothing. A deliberate irony, but still, eventually it begins to wear on you. After reading several of his newer works, some years ago, i gave up on those repetitive, depressing endings.

A Crichton masterpiece
This novel is fast-paced and gripping masterpiece. The movement is non-stop, like being on a fast moving freight train. The characters are very well developed and the plotting is perfect. I highly recommend this novel.

Another Thriller
Super/duper page turner. A bit weak in the ending. The Crichton genius shines through. Always a great story teller. A treat.

Danger around us
I’ve read most of Michael’s books. I found this just looking at titles. I liked it. A fast read. His books always leave you thinking.. what if?

Glad to Have More Crichton Available
When I finished Micro, I couldn’t help but feel a little depressed. Yes, it wasn’t his best work, but it was the last chance to read the author that I’d grown up on. Having read everything else available, I assumed this was the end to the Michael Crichton collection.Fortunately, Hard Case Crime came along and expanded the catalog! Binary was the first I picked up, and while it’s short (I finished in two days while on vacation), it’s a solid story that felt like vintage Crichton! It certainly doesn’t rank among his best, but it’s a solid story that kept me turning the pages, and even followed his classic “this is how technology could go awry” format.Don’t judge this book by its cover… which is an odd one considering there isn’t a naked woman in the entire story (or even a female character aside from a minor one). Guess that’s what suspense thrillers used to look like in the 70’s?It’s a quick and easy to read thriller that’s a little smarter than I expected it to be. I’m excited to move on to the next one and continue working through this collection!

Writer shows potential.
Michael Crichton was at the beginning of his career but this book shows his classic convoluted thinking and switchback plot style. This story has a rare political element. He probably eliminated the political in future stories in an effort not to turn off any readers.

It’s a bit dated but it will entertain you throughout. Recommend it as a quick read! I plan to continue working through the Crichton bibliography after this!

I read it years and years ago in a Czech trasnlation, so I wanted to have the real stuff. Does not disappoint, as usual.

Ãtant un grand fan des livres de Crichton, je ne pouvais qu’aimer cette série écrit sous son pseudonyme. L’écriture est moins abouti que sur ses futurs best sellers mais c’est quand même très bon !
