    Great book
Great book, interesting history, glad I purchased it.

    Old West
I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas. He’s very interested in the old west and about the famous people and places from back then. Not a very long book, but it’s a interesting book.

    An Interesting Read!
No question an interesting read penned by a famous American lawman who lived in the time of the Earps, Clantons, Doc Holliday and others. The only disappointment for me was that about half of the book is comprised of photos, most of which have been published elsewhere. Other than that, a fun way to spend an evening or two.

Understand What You are Buying and You won’t be Disappointed
I’ve read some of the negative reviews here and think that if you know what to expect you won’t be disappointed.
This is a series of five newspaper articles written by Bat Masterson in 1907 for Human Life Magazine. At the time Masterson was a 54 year old newspaper reporter in New York City, having put aside his guns many years before. He was a personal friend of Theodore Roosevelt, who would, a year after these articles were published, appoint Masterson as the U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York.
These are personal recollections of Masterson about men he knew, and the stories he had been told–the most interesting of which may be one of the first popular publication about the shoot out at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona in 1881.
This book will dispel many of the myths that have grown up about the Old West, the most discredited of which is the myth of the shoot out at high noon on a city street where each man attempts to outdraw the other. These real stories are more interesting than the myths, and if the Western ever makes a comeback, this book is an excellent source for true to life versions of the Wild West in those days.

    a fun quick read
Accurate? Maybe. Maybe not. Written by the real McCoy? Definitely. Filled with detail? Definitely not. Still good stuff. Bat was there.

Book & many pictures of gret historical si
Although I have some difficulty at times, understanding Mr. “Bat” Masterson’s grammar, this book is enlightening & thrilling! It doesn’t have the dramatic, overblown details we are familiar with from Hollywood. But he tells us about the shootout at the OK Corral in such a simplified, matter-of-fact way it leaves you with little doubt as to the authenticity of the tale. It is different & much less deliberate than what we’ve seen in movies. But this account makes the tale so clear, it makes sense. Mr Masterson’s also makes very clear his belief in the honesty of Wyatt Warp. He also tells you straight out of his deep respect & abiding friendship for Marshal Earp. Masterson’s talks about each person in the book listing flaws as well as virtues without calling them that. Because he talks so plain & unapologetically, without rendering judgments on the actions of others, it makes his accounts so utterly believable. I believe every word he says in this book. Even with some one like Luke Short, who we would consider violent. Our author, simply tells of Shorts actions, even when he shoots Masterson’s “closest friend” Charlie Storms, Bat Masterson’s tells the story without rancor. It is simply, Charlie did this & Luke did that. But he tells you “Charlie was a very close friend” & so was Luke Short. For anyone who likes to read unvarnished truth & history of the old West this is a must read book. There are many pages of photographs of people mentioned in the book. These I found wonderful all by themselves! Great book!

Amazing book: a glance of the Wild West from the eyes of one of its main characters. I recommend it!

  8. Frank Clarke

This is a very entertaining and informative book originally written by Bat Masterson about men he personally knew, more truth and less myth.

Who could be a better choice to look back on the gunfighters of the Old West than one of their number who had actually managed to survive the others – “Bat” Masterson himself. He had had a career as Buffalo Hunter, Peace Officer, professional Gambler & inhabitant of notorious places like Dodge City & Leadville. Retired now, a journalist & sports correspondent, he was able to reveal his judgements without fear or favour.
This slim volume is made up from his famous articles in “Human Life” on the greats of the Gunfighter era & might surprise you if you didn’t know it beforehand. I suspect that he is biased in favour of his particular friends, but still, you have to respect the judgement of a man who knew his subjects personally in their heydays.
