    Mountain Treachery!
When Amanda disappears after a party, no one knows what was about to unfold. A few days later, her lifeless body is discovered on a ski resort chair lift.Police detectives Daniel and Anton are trying to discover what exactly happened to eighteen year old Amanda. In the meantime, Hanna, disgraced SVU detective from Stockholm, staying at her sisters home in Åre, has been dumped by her long time boyfriend, fired from her job and has no way to support herself. This is an incredible story, set in the Swedish mountain towns. The descriptions are breathtaking, characters sharp and likeable, dialogue crisp. The pace is steady with few, if any, lags. This is my first time reading anything by Viveca Sten, but it won’t be the last. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series.

    Intriguing, But…
I thought Hidden in Snow was an intriguing book that was made even more interesting by the setting. I had to Google Åre because it sounded absolutely beautiful. I was not disappointed. I also googled the part of the country the medical examiner came from and found a fascinating history about the Sami people. This extra research added to the enjoyment of the book. I also had several words I checked the pronunciation of and a few times I took advantage of listening to the book for free, offered through Kindle Unlimited, and I found that helped as well. The actual case, the disappearance and subsequent murder of Amanda, was interesting. I liked Daniel’s and Anton’s characters. I wasn’t impressed by Hannah. The overused character trope of the police woman who plays by her own rules, colors outside the lines, tells nobody where she’s going, even in dangerous situations, nearly dies but saves the day… I could go on and on. I love to read police procedurals, mysteries, and thrillers. So, I come across “Hannah” way too much. And there is always the “toxic male” mantra spewed by the “Hannah” character. It becomes tiresome. Yes, there are always bad apples in the barrel, but those are not just the men apples. In my lifetime I have worked with way more toxic women than toxic men. As a woman, I have found more of the women bosses I have worked for have been downright nasty to deal with. So, my real life observations clash drastically with what I often read. It would make reading these types of books so much more enjoyable if these female characters were written in a way that didn’t rely on using “toxic men” as their crutch.I am going to attempt reading The Åre Murders Book 2 and I hope the author will have moved off that mantra and focused on writing a great book with great characters.

    Good reading
Couldn’t translate some of towns. But I just skipped over them and kept on reading. I liked all the characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A great plot, a satisfactory ending and all the ingredients of a great whodunit. Excellent translation. I will certainly follow the series.

I am new to Viveca Sten books so ‘The Are Series’ has been my introduction to her writing.I really enjoyed being meeting the main characters, though there was a lot of detail to take in (which is always good!) so I may go back and read the book again, now that I know exactly who the important people are :)I love knowing a character’s back-story.I don’t know if it’s because I’m from the UK, but the descriptions given of the locations, sound amazing, totally beautiful.I have form for typing spoilers, so I’ll be a good girl this time and just say that the characters are really likeable, the story is gripping, and I am looking forward to reading the 2nd book.
