From Red to Black: Bank Acct -$301. Did it NOW without How and Asked.
I’m reading Million Dollar Weekend by Noah Kagan. The surprisingly simple way to launch a 7- figure business in 48 hours. This book is insightful and chalk full of to the point, easy and best of all free advice that everyone can do NOW! Not How! Don’t think of the how can I do it, just do it. My review encompasses Part 1. That’s right, I’m not done reading the book. Equipped with erasable Frixion highlighters, and my pack of Frixion erasable multi colored pens, I’ve highlighted the important parts and have written notes and rewritten important passages. For example, my bank account was sitting at negative $301. I had just finished reading the NOW, Not How and came to the ask for a dollar section. At the time I didn’t put two and two together. But I think subliminally I did. I’m currently unemployed and searching for a job in the Creative & Marketing fields. While unemployment can only take you so far, this particular month my knack for keeping the bank account positive dwindled. I debated with my spouse whether or not the inevitable overdraft fees were worth it. It was light lighting money on fire in front of your eyes. Deposit money to have it eaten up immediately, or let the account stay negative and accrue hundreds in overdraft fees, to be further behind? My spouse said to me, let it go, I’ve accepted our fate. However, I had not. I refused to accept it. The next chapter in the book spoke about asking. Let your rejection muscle flex and just ask! I mustered up the courage and did the unthinkable. Well, what most would say is unthinkable. I posted on Facebook and ASKED. I asked right then and there. It gave me butterflies in my stomach. I began preparing myself for rejection and embarrassment. I immediately thought, it’s not too late to delete the post and reduce and/or avoid engagement (or lack there of). Instead, I let it stay. I asked if I had any friends who could Zelle me a dollar. My quick math told me if I could get at least half of negative $301, we’d be in a better spot than before. Low and behold, doing that NOW, and not asking How, educated me immediately. I received a comment. Uh oh. I thought to myself. Get ready for rejection. I had explained in the comments what was going on with our finances, my lack of a job, and how we couldn’t receive money for a job done without “lighting it on fire,” so to speak, and asked my Facebook friends within the comments, what would you do? Light money on fire to be eaten up by the negative $301, or add more debt by letting it side and the bank gets their free money (our overdraft fees) because of my inability to make the account positive again. One of the first things taught in this book, Million Dollar Weekend, is to EXPERIMENT for yourself! Just do it. So I did. What did I quickly learn from that first comment? I learned you cannot ask for one dollar through Zelle, nor can others give it to you. My friend commented that Zelle has a minimum transfer requirement of $5. I immediately thought, well crap. I felt a wave of rejection come over me. I can’t even ask for one dollar. Shoot. But I did ask. I eventually learned within 30 minutes of perseverance (not deleting my ask)… that simple ask, that I feared doing, was worth doing. $5 came into our account. Negative $301 became negative $296. And so on. Being in the red in our bank account eventually turned to black. I received a phone call asking if I had been hacked. I explained the situation and realized, woah, that’s conceivable. So I took a screenshot of our negative bank account and commented with a thank you to the first person who sent us $5. Then another, and another. One friend messaged me about it and said they applauded my courage to ask. I faced the fear of potential rejection head on, and being in the red, turned into being in the black. We were no longer negative. Praise God, and I thanked God for bringing this book into my life. I took a leap of faith with Noah’s encouragement. Though, I didn’t ask for a dollar for my new business. I asked for a dollar to bring red to black. Not being negative. And I can’t thank all my friends enough! They saved us from probably hundreds in overdraft fees and now we have enough to cover the electricity. They and this book gave me courage. I’m excited to move on to reading part 2 of Million Dollar Weekend. I still feel a small tinge of embarrassment for having to ask, but you can’t eventually get a yes without asking first. So if you’ve ever been in a spot like we are in, struggling financially and searching endlessly for a job…I ask: do you have a dollar (or 5 with the case of Zelle) to help get us through this job dryspell?Zelle/PayPal sarafluegel@gmail.com Venmo @SaraFluegel (3872 last four digits) or CashApp $SaraFluegel, profile photo is of art with wood against a wall. With that ask, I’m excited to move on to reading part 2 of Million Dollar Weekend.

If you’ve been following entrepreneurial culture for the last decade, you’ve probably already come across Noah Kagan. After cutting his teeth as a member of the teams behind Facebook and Mint, Kagan built his own company Appsumo to $80 million in revenue and nurtured a YouTube channel teaching business principles to over a million subscribers. In Million Dollar Weekend, Kagan takes the best of what he’s learned in the trenches and presents an inspiring and very actionable path for any new entrepreneur. What you effectively get from this book is a point-to-point roadmap that walks you through the entire process from beginning to end.And if business books are hard for you to swallow, there’s a sweetener with this one. MDW is written in Kagan’s signature style, an appealing blend of charm and savvy that makes the title an engaging read while giving you a first-rate business education at the same time.Million Dollar Weekend is impressively polished (and a remarkable achievement for an author’s first published book) and stands out confidently and distinctively in a crowded genre.
