A FUN SHORT STORY – GHOSTS AND BARGAINS – WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE?
Grace sees and talks to ghosts. She helps find out who may have murdered people in order to make them into a ghost. Grace has a resident ghost who is around nearly all the time. Pearl is an elderly woman who is connected to the shop where Grace and her brother, Frankie, sell items they have gotten from storage lockers. At the most recent auction, Grace has purchased a locker for little or no money. It is filled with bargains which will sell well in the shop. And there is at least one ghost connected to some of the items. A gentleman ghost, Archie Goodwin, is in his wedding clothes and one of the purchased items is his suitcase. This story has another ghost, a young and beautiful girl named Lily.Grace is open to connecting to ghosts and actually listening to what they say. So, the ghosts are anxious to speak to her. This is a short read with a fun premise. The characters, whether live or dead, are believable and easy to like. The plot is well done. This is the first book I have read by Ms Larkin and I plan to look for another of her stories.

Middle Vows
What a good idea for a mystery – and with ghosts! Wow! What fun. I really like Pearl the resident ghost helping Grace. Handsome groom, Beautiful bride but groom dies in the honeymoon suite. A crabby hotel clerk, a sprite flitting around in a wedding gown. Who are these people, what do they have to do with murder? The answers are found with pleasant reading.

Fun, but punctuation errors are distracting
This story has a fun premise and characters with potential. However, it reads like a first draft. I suggest using a proofreader – or getting a better one. This book is so filled with comma splices (there are one or two in every other sentence!) it distracted me to the point that I found it difficult to get any enjoyment from the story. My high school English teacher would drop students’ grades down for every comma splice she found in their writing. This is basic punctuation. If one professes to be a writer, one should at least know the basics. Overall, the characters could have used more fleshing out. I found Lily and Frankie to be fun. There’s a lot of potential here.

Great read.
The book was light and fun to read. I totally enjoyed it. Never bogged down and kept me guessing who the murderer was. Surprise ending.

Very Good all around
I happened upon The Last Reading by this author. It was good so I got this one too. I give it 5 stars because Gillian has great characterization, a well thought-out /interesting plot, good-looking flow, and a good mystery/villain. Her ending/resolution makes sense but is not obvious. I will definitely be seeking out more of her books! If you enjoy Agatha Christie, add Gillian Larkin to your bookshelf!

As ghost stories go, this isn’t in the least bit scary, and is in fact quite amusing. It’s not every day a set of ghosts seek you out asking for help albeit you wish you couldn’t actually see them. One wouldn’t have thought there would be much mirth surrounding a murder after a wedding and ghosts that appear out of nowhere all of a sudden, but this author manages to combine a cosy mystery containing ghosts with humour running through a yarn that is, I have to say, very entertaining. It’s the sort of story that doesn’t tax the brain too much, and I am pleased to admit that I wouldn’t have guessed the culprit in a million years. Our main character Grace can see ghosts and she frequents storage lockers for bargains because mostly that is where she will encounter them, spiritually attached to old furniture and other discarded possessions. The ‘fun’ begins when she is contacted by Archie who had only been married a short while before he is inexplicably murdered and Grace, along with a couple of helper ghosts, has her work cut out trying to find out who would want him dead, who would gain from his death, and even how they committed the crime.Nothing is what it seems. Even the sour-faced Ms Berry (nicknamed Raspberry behind her back) who works at the hotel where the couple had booked the honeymoon suite has something to hide. With twists aplenty and amusing throughout, I would recommend this novel as a fun read.

An amusing book with a plot that never lets you down, Murder Vows is a great cozy mystery with a supernatural twist. The buoyant and sympathetic heroine, Grace, has developed the ability to see and hear ghosts, and she meets them when she’s looking at the unclaimed detritus of people’s lives, at auction sales of the contents of storage facilities. There is logic here, because what better reason for not claiming your belongings is there than being unexpectedly dead? Yet the concept is a bit of a surprise; it’s not something most of us would think of. This combination of strict logic and off-the-wall whimsy fills the book with unexpected laughs and moments of suspense. My enjoyment of the book was only slightly dampened by my puzzlement about why one of the characters had the same name as a major character in another mystery series; I decided in the end that it was the author’s way of paying tribute. Based on reading this book, I can say that I will probably be reading other books by Gillian Larkin.

A really good light-hearted read.Grace owns a second hand shop with her brother, but she can also see ghosts. She is at storage locker sale and a ghost appears and asks her to help a girl (that is somehow linked to the items in the storage locker) and so the story begins..

I read my first Agatha Christie book at the age of 8, I can still remember it some 30+ yrs later, off ill from school, I was in my parents bed & instead of reading the Enid Blyton books supplied, I sneaked a peek at Sparkling Cyanide & from then on I was hooked on cosy crime. To me, there is nothing better than curling up with a good mystery & a wee tot of drambuie after putting the kids to bed but I really wasn’t sure that the paranormal element of these books would be my cup of tea, but decided to give them a chance anyway, I am so glad I did, I have now bought all of her books from all of her series & have found throughout that the plots are very well constructed, the characters grow with each book & the author has the knack of making you feel involved with the story.
