At last, an author who writes like Christie
This novel was pure joy to read. Well developed characters who matched the lovely setting. A believable mystery plot. And such a satisfying denouement, something that tends to be missing from many modern mysteries, where the heroine has to be rescued from a stupid decision. Looking forward to more reading pleasure from Margaret Mahew. I appreciate her taking the time to introduce her readers to the backgrounds of her characters.

lovely read
This was,for me, a true cozy mystery. Main character is a retired military officer, widower, who is intelligent, calm and kind. Other characters are interesting in their own right and none are overly dramatic or too odd to be true. Several make good suspects and I was surprised by the true culprit. Looking forward to the series

This one doesn’t fade either
I didn’t like the s!ow pace at the beginning. It was essential to understanding the characters though and, it builds quickly from there. I loved the characters, and how the mystery grows. Each person had difficulties with the victim and that made for a good list of suspects! Some were more sympathetic than others, and there is a real twist at the end, which I also loved! The main character is wonderful, a quiet widower, just retired from the army, he’s at loose ends, but he is not the type of old soldier to just fade away, and once he gets involved, well, our Old Soldier becomes Hercules Poirot and Miss Maple all rolled into one!

An Interesting Read
A very pleasurable, easy read. The mystery is ok but nothing spectacular. There were a number of the characters who totally disliked the victim and could possibly have had a justifiable motive for committing it. I will admit that I was surprised as to who it was. The book was enjoyable but no Agatha Christie. Nonetheless I enjoyed it enough that I am going to read the next in the series.

A well written cozy all around
Good characters, well drawn and detailed setting too. Fairly good mystery, but the main find is the fine narrative. Enjoyed this read from start to end.

A delightful book – a delightful series!
I have read the entire series and love it! Old Soldiers Never Die features the Colonel or Hugh as the likeable main character. Following the rules of the British Army, Hugh had to retire at age 55. After five years of unsatisfying work, he retires to a village where he and his late wife Laura had planned on living. He moves into a real fixer upper and inherits a beat up looking tomcat named Thursday. This is a very cozy mystery series with characters I really enjoy. In addition to the Colonel, you have the pleasant successful single daughter, Alison; you have his son, Marcus and his super mommy wife, Susan. I think the author keeps the nutrition-conscious Susan around for comic relief. Then, there are the villagers: Naomi the divorcee who prefers to be known as a widow with a green thumb who is Hugh’s woman friend; you have the boozy Major who fancies himself as a lady’s man and his overbearing club woman wife, Marjorie. This series is different in that there are less deaths and you don’t get to the murder until about halfway through. I don’t mind this as I enjoy the village and characters so much. Other aspects of the plots are unorthodox, but I think they are good for a change.Â

Very Engaging and Lovely
Sweet little Corset murder mystery. Love the cast of characters. The Colonel is just a fine and sympathetic widower and perfectly cast as the protagonist. Well told, this genre, for me, provides a perfect bit of escapism, as opposed to reading some vapid, poorly written shades of grey filth. Good story and well written cast of characters. I recommend the Author as her writing style and storytelling are woven together seamlessly. I will continue with this series. In fact the next book is already downloaded and queued up.

The book is a pleasant read, well written with a host of interesting characters. Each is well depicted and they come across as real people. The murderer and the reason for murder did not seem convincing hence only four stars, but the book held one’s interest till the end
