Starship’s Mage: Omnibus written by Glynn Stewart and narrated by Jeffrey Kafer was a story I enjoyed. I borrowed this audiobook from my library through Hoopla and as a result I will review both the narration and story in my review.Narration was top notch. I tended to like Jeffrey Kafer’s voice. It had a gravely component to it that gave credence to the type of story Starship’s Mage turned out to be. He was easy to follow and was not over the top or annoying as I’ve found some audiobook narrators to be. I typically listen to audiobooks while driving long distances for work and rate the narration as 5/5.The story meanwhile was also good. While at times the plot devices to move the story forward tended to appear forced, I really liked the story. In Starship’s Mage, Damien Montgomery has just graduated from Jump Mage school. When his attempts to find a place of work fall flat due to competition from the ruling elite, hope almost appears to be gone until he finds opportunity aboard a freighter that is hunted by pirates. Damien however just wants to jump and is willing to do anything to get his chance. It’s not too long after that Damien and the Blue Jay encounter an attack that causes Damien to break mage law and make an alternation that no one has ever heard of before. Just like that everything changes for Damien and eventually leads to the Blue Jay running from just about everyone. If you enjoy gritty Sci-Fi books, you will enjoy Starship’s Mage: Omnibus, especially as the book is free right now on Amazon, you have absolutely nothing to lose. As a result of a good story, engaging cast, and a new twist on Sci-Fi I have not seen yet, I am giving this book 4/5 Starship Mage’s for a good story. The only reason I rated it 4/5 stars as opposed to 5/5 were the plot twists that sometimes were just dropped there to continue the story.

    Layers of the universe
Great pacing, Great way of building a narrative, in other words, Great story. This series is written like the steps to a stairwell, it began somewhat confusing to me atleast but, it did a great job of pulling me out of the confusion into a well paced story. Thank you for sharing your gift to the world.

I must admit that I was somewhat skeptic when I started this book. Magic and SciFi? Allí other books that I read trying to mix them were just so-so.This book, however, uses an inteligente mixture that does not come across as weird. Wells written, the story IS also fast-paced, includes intrigue -a bit of love- and lots of action. Actually, I’m going to read the next book, so as to see if the level IS maintained.

Nicely written, very long and super action. I am buying the next volume right now. I am absolutely recommending this book – space opera at it’s best.

Amazing book. Gripping from start to the end. A beautiful captivating world, that combines the best of two worlds, sci fi and fantasy. Recommended to anyone who is the fan of either genre.

I bought this a few months ago and read it. Then read everything after and loved it. Now I’m “re-reading” the series as an audio book to prep for the upcoming book. The biggest boon in my opionon is the world building. I was so glad this isn’t a space fantasy series where explanations are thrown out the window, this is a real science fiction book. It’s more star trek than star wars, but magic can circumvent the conventional issues the normal laws of science restricts. Then you notice that the magic is very physical. Nothing supernatural (ex. mind control), more bending with the laws of nature (ex. inertial-dampeners). The author (outside of the books) has hinted at a rule system and limitations, so it’s clearly a harder magic system. Which pairs well with the harder (hard-lite?) sci-fi setting otherwise. You have a very interesting protagonist, and an alright support cast. Which thankfully get fleshed out in other books.I’ve also enjoyed his Duchy of Terra Series and his Exile series. Couldn’t get into Castle Federation.Glynn Stewart is luckily a prolific writer, so getting hooked on his books means you get a book per series per year-ish. Which is fantastic.
