A murder victim who gets his due
Another addition to this wonderful series. I love the humor, and Melrose is my favorite character. And I look forward to more from that cheeky cat Cyril. This story took a turn I didn’t expect. I became intrigued with the character, Tommy Diver, and am wondering if there will be more to follow about his role in the lives of this little English village and nearby. The author doesn’t forget previous characters, even ones who met unfortunate ends. The adulterous murder victim in this book was indeed the villain. I think what I enjoy most about these stories is how the author treats our emotions when we encounter the disappointments that often come with our human encounters.

One of the better Jury novels
Ms. Grimes has written a lot in this series, but overall the novels are comfortably enjoyable. This is one of the better ones; the remembered characters are mostly here, and who doesn’t love Trueblood as a core character? Jury and Plant are true to form. I think the series could use a realistic romantic pairing, but Plant apparently doesn’t care (but can we do away with Agatha?), and Jury is incompetent. Just a pleasurable night by the fire mystery.

    Always a god read
Martha Grime’s Richard Jury books are always a good read and this one is no exception. A good story line and a great cast of characters.

    The Five Bells and Bladebone
Excellent read. I love Martha Grimes as a writer and Inspector Jury and Melrose Plant as characters. I thought I had read all her books before but, somehow missed this one! What a treat to have a new one (for me) to read. These characters are so enduring.Jury’s melancholia is absorbing. I did not have this one figured out before the end.

  5. Shirley Bray

    the pig and whistle
This story had a very good beginning but too many characters and aside from the pig, had an ambiguous ending The ending was unsatisfactory. Too little of either Melrose or Agatha and too many side stories. The writing itself was as poetic in places as always. Would not recommend this book.

  6. Silvia Escorel de Moraes

mesmerizing play of conflicts and comforts
all of the Richard Jury books are thrilling and comforting at the same time thanks to the well constructed plots and the human warmth of the main characters.

    Came on time
It was a book. I am reading it.
