Mom of 3 Boys and a Lil Lass –
An Excellent Read
This book sat in my TBR pile for months. I repeatedly shied away from it not in small part because of comments I’d seen in reviews: too many characters to keep straight, story rambles on and on, easy to lose track of the story… and so on.When the title was selected as our book club read for August, however, I knew it was time to pull it from the shelf and give it a try, and am I ever glad I did!I found The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store to be a literary masterpiece full of beautiful prose, memorable characters, and a story that will keep you wanting to read one more chapter simply to meet more of its interesting characters, folks with names like Fatty, Paper, Dodo, and Monkey Pants, with personalities as bold and well-developed as their names might suggest.

A very unique tale. However, the ending left me up in the air with some of the other characters. Beautifully written with moments of uproarious humor and stunning wisdom.

This was a book club choice, I was uncertain about after reading some negative reviews. Caught me by surprise, and enjoyed every page. Glad to have read on Kindle to check meanings of many words. The book could have been meaningful in 2024 as it was in 1920+. Rich characters, descriptions of places which you can hear and smell. Long time since I have read such a quality writing. It brought me to small European places where growing up, the language and spoken word with incredible humour in happy or difficult times was familiar and alive to me.

An intertwined story about negroes, jews and whites. James McBride knows all three very well , he is Jewish and Black , presumably with a white Jewish mother. All the characters are well fleshed out with dialog befitting the times. A wonderful find.

A very enjoyable book. There are a lot of threads leading to the end of the book. All in all well worth reading.
