Got this to find out about his WWII service
Niven never talked about his service in WWII–after seeing one of the cemeteries in France, he felt those fellows gave more than he ever could…. There is little here, because there is little information about the “operation” he was mostly involved with. Good overall biography, though, IMHO. And at least the part I was looking for was there, if briefly. Maybe now I can dig on-line and find out more.

Probably not for fans of Niven
I’ve been a fan of David Niven since I was a teenager. I’ve always felt that even the less than stellar movies were better because he was in them, even if briefly. When I discovered his memoirs (The Moon is a Balloon and Bring on the Empty Horses) I laughed until I cried, and when I saw him on one of his last TV appearances and realized that something was terribly wrong I did cry.I saw this biography listed and was eager to learn more about the man who had delighted me for years with his marvelous performances. I was quite disappointed that the author did not share my enthusiasm for Mr Niven’s work. It seemed that the majority of the book was a prolonged critique of not only Niven’s work as an actor and writer but also of him personally. I still admire Mr Niven and will continue to watch any of his movies or TV programs that I can find. I don’t particularly care if I ever read another book by this author.

    I’m still reading but…
Overall this is a good read so far, although if you don’t know a few British terms, you’ll be looking them up. Its not as good as The Moon’s a Balloon, but who wouldn’t love David Niven?

    Informative!
David Niven was a great actor.

    Somewhat disappointing
I often wonder why writers write bios of performers whose work they don’t really like. I don’t say he should be a full time cheerleader but he seems to undervalue Mr. Niven as an actor and is down right snooty about many of his quite enjoyable films.Added note, I read this book some years ago in hardback and more recently in a digital edition that lacked both footnotes and photos. Buyer Beware.

This book should be required reading for anyone wondering how the British got their stiff upper lip! David Niven, that epitome of style and grace, was an actor from the Hollywood era of Ronald Coleman and Errol Flynn who wasn’t actually an actor. He had no formal training but learnt on the job, and went on to work both before and after the war in numerous films where he played the typical military officer, or the gentleman jewel thief, always keeping that cut glass voice no matter what part he played. This is a very readable book, written with affection and wit by Sheridan Morley, and many times I laughed till I cried, and then at the end I just cried. A lovely homage to a lovely man. Highly recommended.

Good to read but I found the very beginning and end hard to get into. Sad finding out what Mr Niven went through

I enjoyed this interesting account of the subject’s life.I had read extracts from a more personal and scandalous account so I was more interested in the details of his career and how he started in films.Niven sounds like a man of great charm. Not even Richard Burton had many bad things to say about him: see Burton’s Diaries.
