Loved It!
I’ll start with the few complaints I have against this book: I didn’t like the this book began AFTER Bree was already turned into a vampire. I didn’t like that she had already been undead for 3 months by the time the story began, and I didn’t like that the supporting characters got so little face time. Sure, we knew they were dangerous and had little gangs among the large coven, and we knew there was a lot of internal fighting. But some of the personalities were so interesting, and strong. I would have liked to know more about them – what made them so different from Bree and Diego and Fred – all were brought into the same life in the same way – but some turned out smart, some turned out dumb, some turned out mean, and some became capable of love and loyaly. I would have liked learning more about them all individually and riddled that out. I think I became a bit too spoiled by the Twilight Saga because Stephanie flushed out those characters so much.BUT – since the book IS titled: The SHORT SECOND life of Bree Tanner (meaning her life as a vampire and not human) I can’t fault it for not starting while she was human or for keeping the book short and therefore the information and stories on a need to know basis. I would have liked to know a bit more about her though. While the book did give a brief and impersonal explanation of the road that lead her to Riley, I would have liked to read it first hand and experience it with her. What it was like to be brought to “her” and what Bree’s impressions of her creator were. But I still gave the book 5 stars because it was a great book and I couldn’t put it down! It really showed how difficult it was for the newborns to live together in such a hostile environment, it showed what they were thinking and why they agreed to Riley and Victoria’s plan when they didn’t know Bella or the Cullen’s at all. I also loved reading this book and then immediately pulling out my copy of Eclipse and rereading the same fight scene until Bree’s death in order to match up what was happening. I love how well it fit together. All in all, while it made a great book, I really wish her life had been different. I wish she had ran in the clearing and met up with Fred, I wish she had been let go. I liked the final book without her – but I ended up really liking the character a lot and wishing she had a chance to live out her life as an immortal. I think she would have become a strong vampire. Already at 3 months old she was able to leave a hunt while her fellow newborns were feeding, and she was quiet, and intelligent. She could have become another yellow eyed vampire – and a good friend of the Cullen’s.Three Cheers for Bree!

Wonderful Short Story by the Talented Ms Meyer
In my opinion, this was the best entry in the Twilight series. Set in the weeks before the big fight in Eclipse, it tells the story of newborn vampire Bree Tanner, a former runaway with no place to go. As a vampire she is disgusted by some of the behavior of her peers and does her best to quietly blend in and avoid trouble. For a while she does well at this, thanks to the repelling powers of Freaky Fred, another vampire, dubbed so by his vampire peers who are repulsed by him. However, while out hunting she eventually attracts the attention of Diego, another newborn vampire who has retained some of his human qualities. He likes Bree and the two of them spend a blissful day learning about each other and about their new existence as vampires. Together they learn that sunlight is not dangerous to vampires as they had believed and decide to share this information with their coven leader, Riley. Unfortunately, as they soon find out, this knowledge is dangerous.Their romance is quick and fleeting and ultimately doomed but it is charming and cute while it lasts. Bree is a fascinating character with layer after layer, like an onion that is slowly peeled back. Diego is also interesting but before we can learn much about him he is gone. And then there is Fred, whose powers of repulsive magnetism served as a shield for both himself and Bree. Unfortunately for Bree, Fred decides to go off on his own, rebelling against Riley who wants to lead them into a fight against the Cullen coven. Fred doesn’t trust Riley and asks Bree to accompany him. Sadly, she has been led astray by Riley who has promised to lead her to Diego, an offer she can’t refuse. Fred invites both her and Diego to meet up with him the following day and Bree agrees, not realizing that her time on Earth is sadly coming to an end…This book was wonderful. I am not a huge fan of the Twilight series, having read the series only because a friend of mine begged me to. However, with it’s rich story and complex characters, not to mention a great plot, this book is irresistible. Bree Tanner is probably my favorite character in the entire series. Stephenie Meyer claims this was a writing exercise in her folder. I can only hope she decides to write more exercises and share them with the world.Five Stars.

Good side story
For context, I think you should read the book she’s mentioned in before you read this standalone story. It’s short and enjoyable. Best to read them all in order they were written.

Grata

I absolutely loved this shorter story. I found the perspective of Bree Tanner really interesting and I thought Stephaine Meyer wrote it beautifully. I read this a few months after as I first read the Twilight series and I think everyone who is a twilight fan should pick this up. The book came in perfect condition and I finished it in one sitting. I was hooked. Would definitely recommend it and the price is so good.Pages: 178Chapters: No chapters. One big story.
