Great Educational Books!
My 8 year old has been slow to read, but then we found the Who Was, What Was Books! These books are great! The language is simple enough for him to read himself, but the book does a great job explaining to topic being covered. I must admit, I have been learning a great deal listening to my 3rd Grader read! These are great books to get readers interested in topics. After reading the Blackbeard book in 2 days, my son is already begging me to get more books about Blackbeard!

9 yo old loves these books
I’m glad they came out with these books. They don’t shy away from some more grown-up content yet still are child appropriate. I knew nothing about Blackbeard other than being a pirate and learned some things myself. Some of the other books I’ve read with my son, I’ve known the subject better and was please with the content they chose to illustrate their lives. Probably our 15th book read from this line of literature.

Very detailed book!
My 10 year old said it was “a very descriptive book, included as many details about his early childhood as they possibly could have known.” He loves Who HQ books & owns approximately 120!

I bought this book to use with my 8 and 10 year old grandchildren who had been asked to research local pirates as part of their homeschooling. I was able to use the internet to find a few facts about some Cornish and Devonian pirates who would be our most local ones. This book enabled us to find many similarities in background and experience of this most famous of pirates with our more local ones. The fact pages were very useful and the story of Blackbeard’s life was retold in an accessible way for both of them. They enjoyed reading it themselves as well as having me read it to them. I know this series of books and they are always informative and a good read. We all enjoyed it.

We love the Who Was/Who Is/Where Is series! Great stories, even I like to read them along with my daughter. So happy to have found books my 9 year old will read!

This book contains little information about Blackbeard and a lot of conjecture. You feel the author trying to supplement the thin biography with slightly relevant additional information – including a big story on Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean! We love the Who was Series. This title is not up to par.

If you love the sea, this takes you beyond. Factual and imaginative descriptions of a time that lives only in our minds.
